For the majority of the Mancos High School boys and girls track teams, competing during Spring Break proved to be too much work.

Three Bluejays athletes did compete however, running and throwing in the Bayfield Quad Meet on April 5.

Leading the way for the Bluejays was senior Justin Burton, who, showcasing the strong work ethic for which he is known, placed fourth overall in the 1600-meter run (5:04.26).

Finishing just ahead of Burton was a trio of Durango runners led by Trent Andrews, who won the event with a time of 4:48.11.

"We're really pleased with Justin," said Bluejays head coach Adam Priestley. "He's working hard in practice, and he thinks he has a great chance of making state this year."

Also turning in a strong performance for the Bluejays on the boys side was senior Ty Koppenhafer, who finished sixth in the discus (102 feet, nine inches) and eighth in the shot put (35 feet, 11½ inches).

"Ty has been taking great steps," said Priestley. "If he keeps doing what he's been asked to do, he has a great chance at state."

Competing on the girls side for the Bluejays, Jessalyn Bay-Voit ran hard, finishing seventh in the 800 (3:32.75).

"Jessalyn has been sick the last three or four weeks," Priestley explained. "This was her first week back. She's working hard, and she has a great attitude."

Hoping that the return of the majority of their runners will provide a spark, the Bluejays will next compete at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Invitational in Cortez on April 9.

"We're back off of Spring Break, and the outlook looks great," said Priestley. "I'm pleased with our effort in practice."
