Historical Society affirms support for Mancos Opera House

At the July general meeting of the Mancos Valley Historical Society on Saturday, July 12, the group's leadership affirmed its financial support for the Mancos Opera House remodeling and its efforts to involve children in the appreciation of local history.

The decision followed a potluck in Linda Simmons' backyard.

The organization is also beginning a family name file, and will begin gathering photos of the older homes in Mancos. For the family name file, oral histories and obituaries are welcome, Simmons said.

The society helped host the open house for the Mancos Common Press in June, and at the meeting expressed enthusiasm for the Western Heritage Celebration planned by the Chamber and others for Labor Day 2015.

Membership in the historical society is 89, according to membership officer Mac Neely.
