Looking back to 1989

I'm finishing off 1989 - 25 years ago - this time around.

Athletes of the week were Aaron Halls, Amanda Martin and Kirk Coppinger. Third-graders in Pat Bledsoe's room were treated to a touch of history by Fern Ellis, our local historian.

Helen Wagner Hirsch passed away at the age of 79. She graduated from Mancos High in 1928.

The 1989 Mancos Homecoming Queen is Amanda Martin and her escort was Randy Halls. Kathy Reynolds was escorted by Luther Elliss.

Daylight Savings Time will end at 2 a.m. Sunday. People need to remember fall back in the fall and spring ahead in the spring.

Sunday the 22nd of October is a day Ken Hopperton will remember, since that was the day he turned 80.

Milton Hurst passed away at the age of 68. He was a long time resident of Mancos and a member of Mancos VFW Post No. 5231.

Dolores Martinez has been recognized as Paraprofessional of the Year by the Colorado Association for bilingual Education. She has taught in the bilingual education program in Mancos for 17 years.

Lola Roberts, 66, of Mancos was one of the winners of $30,000 in the Colorado Lottery's scratch game.

Memorial services were held for George Wayne Bauer, 79. He is survived by his wife Clare Bauer and daughters Anne McGregor and Susan Weller.

The women of Chapter BD of the PEO presented a $750 grant to Sandy Conway Andricci. The presentation was made by Esther Cook, Kate Ott and Roma Ewing.

Randy Halls and Luther Elliss were Mancos representatives on the all San Juan Basin League first team. Hal Bayles and Damian Marcum received honorable mention.

Ellen Paquin was awarded Realtor of the Month for October. She is with Prudential Triple S Realty.
