Star party to be held at Mancos State Park

If you've ever wanted to learn more about the night sky over Colorado, plan to attend an astronomy event at Mancos State Park, Saturday, Aug. 30.

Members of the Four Corners Stargazers Astronomy Club will set up telescopes at dark to help people see distant nebulas, stars, planets, the moon and more. The viewing starts as soon as the stars come out, and the telescopes will be set up until 11 p.m.

The "Star Party" is just one of several special events that will take place at the park over the Labor Day weekend.

From 10 -11 a.m. on Aug. 30, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, park naturalist Carol Bylsma will give a presentation about butterflies of the southern Rockies. Participants will learn how to capture, examine and release butterflies. She'll also talk about other insects that inhabit our area.

From 3 - 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 30 and Aug. 31, "Wild Games" will teach children and adults all about wildlife, predators and prey.

A campfire program starting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30, will feature "Mancos John," an old miner who spins tall tales. At 7 p.m. on Aug. 31, park naturalist Carol Bylsma will talk about flora, fauna and give away prizes during her great outdoors trivia contest.

Mancos State Park is a few miles northeast of Mancos on Road 42. The events are free; entry to the park is $7 per vehicle or $70 for an annual pass.
