Bluejays fall to Rangely

Mancos football team struggles in route to 42-6 loss
Mancos quarterback Axel Bonde looks for running room during his team's 42-6 loss to Rangely on Aug. 29.

Two games into its season, the Mancos High School football team is reeling.

One week after losing 50-0 against Norwood, the Bluejays traveled to Rangely on Aug. 29 and lost 42-6.

According to associate head coach Josh Gardner, the Bluejays struggled to move the ball against Rangely's staunch defense.

"They were better than what we expected," said Gardner. "We had trouble running on them."

The Bluejays lone touchdown of the contest came courtesy of a four-yard run by junior Everett Strazza-Whalen.

Two fumbles, costly penalties and a spate of missed tackles consistently killed Mancos' momentum, however.

"Turnovers and penalties killed our momentum," Gardner said. "We need to work on our tackling."

With their record now at 0-2 on the season, the Bluejays will practice this week in preparation for a home matchup against Newcomb on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. Since Newcomb is an 11-man football team, the teams will play 8-man football when Mancos is on offense and 11-man football when Newcomb is on offense.
