Arts shine in recent editions of Mancos Times

I was in hopes of being able to write a column about 2013, but the most recent year on microfilm at the library is 2007.

"Mancos Mush is actively seeking sponsorship and has named the Medicine Horse Center as its non-profit beneficiary," said Betsy Harrison, event organizer. (The article was written by Pam Sichel, editor of the Mancos Times.)

"Buddhism is flourishing in Montezuma County," stated Retha Williams. "Most Buddhists believe that personal enlightenment can be achieved in this world within the practitioner's lifetime."

Four students from Mancos have graduated from Fort Lewis College. They are Amanda Hartman, Loretta Marlman, Hilda Moreno and Roberto Porras.

The Hesperus Ski Patrol is offering its eleventh annual avalanche and avoidance class.

In a letter to the editor Terry Marsden wrote in part, "Has anyone else missed Mary Wilson's Friends and Neighbors column as much as I have?"

Bob Fletcher caught a 14-inch, four pound rainbow trout at Jackson Gulch Reservoir while fishing with his friend Gordon Wonocott.

The San Juan National Forest will be accepting applications for the Aspen Guard Station Artist-in-Residence program Jan. 1 through March 1. The Aspen Guard Station is a rustic log cabin set in an aspen grove 12 miles north of Mancos.

On January 6, the Mancos Masonic Lodge installed its new officers. Boe Hawkins was installed as Junior Warden, Willie Elmore as Lodge Chaplain, Philip Walters Secretary, Jack Ott Treasurer, Tom Weaver installing marshal, Clay Bader installing officer, and Dan Corcoran Sr. Warden. Other installations included Herman Wagner as Junior Steward, Zane Wright as Junior Deacon and James Bristol as Senior Deacon. David Starliper was named Worshipful Master and David Everett was named Senior Steward.

The Mancos Renaissance Faire 2007 planning committee will be meeting on Wednesday afternoon once a month starting in January. The Faire dates will be June 23 and 24.

The Mancos Valley Chorus will begin practices on January 24 at 7 PM at the Methodist Church.

A long history column appeared. There was a story in it about Mary Zufelt that I will shorten and run in the near future.

January 1 marked not only the beginning of a new year, it is also the opening of the window for students to begin to apply for college financial aid for 2007.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture has been working to protect livestock stranded by the recent blizzards. Cleaning roadways for normal travel and feeding livestock cut off by the storms are major issues facing the state. ((May we here in the Mancos Valley get enough snow this winter to have to worry about getting feed to livestock.)
