Still relatively unknown to local sports fans, Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Cortney Cashner is beginning to make a name for herself on the basketball court and soccer field.

Currently the starting point guard for M-CHS’s junior varsity basketball team, Cashner played varsity for the first time in her high school career at the Cedaredge-Delta Tournament earlier this month.

“I like the fast pace and the energy of basketball,” said Cashner. “We want to go to the playoffs this year. Hopefully in the coming years we can build a strong program.”

Last spring, Cashner played left defensive back for the M-CHS girls’ soccer team and plans to play soccer this fall. Cashner said that she hopes to fill the role vacated by some of last year’s seniors.

“We lost a couple of girls, so we’ll need to step up to fill their shoes,” said Cashner.

Cashner currently owns a 4.0 GPA and listed her favorite class as English. The sophomore said that she plans to go to college, but does not yet know what she will study.

“I don’t really know what profession I want to pursue yet,” said Cashner. “It changes everyday. One day I want to be a firefighter and the next day I want to be a physical therapist.”

When not studying or playing sports, Cashner enjoys driving in the mountains with her parents and spending time with her older brother.
