A new millennium: New officers at the lodge; trustee forced out

What was going on in the Mancos Valley as the new millennium approached?

President Bill Clinton's signature on Dec. 19 ended the uncertainty facing some Mancos Valley users.

Bob Heyder, as president of the Mancos Valley Historical Society, presented Patsy Smith, Mancos public library director, with seven volumes of the R-G-S story, a lavishly detailed and illustrated history of the narrow-gauge railroad that served Mancos and other San Juan communities.

Lou Eppich was presented a plaque for his many years of service to the Root and Ratliff Ditch Company.

Caught being good were Jack Watts, 1st grade, and Courtney Janz, fifth grade.

Lois Skaggs joined the Mancos Elementary School faculty this fall as a resource teacher. Ms. Skaggs graduated from Mancos High in 1986.

Ellen Paquin of the Triple S Realty wished everyone a Happy New Year.

Gary Woosley has received his paramedic certification from the state of Colorado on November 27 achieving the highest level of E. M. S that he could go to at that point.

New officers for Mancos Lodge No. 100 were installed on Dec. 9. They were Herman Wagner, Senior Deacon; Steve Hawkins, Master; Clay Bader, Senior Steward; Noland Alexander, Junior Steward; Dick Edwards, Junior Deacon; Dick Cover, Chaplain; Marty Hillebrand, Secretary; Sam Weeks, Tyler; David Everett, Senior Warden; Amador Garcia, Junior Warden; and Jack Ott, Treasurer. (Since that time, the Lodge has lost Herman Wagner, Steve Hawkins, Clay Bader, Dick Edwards, Marty Hillebrand and Jack Ott.)

Eight inches of snow blanketed the Mancos Valley on the 1st and 2nd of January with bright Colorado sun shining through on the 3rd.

Mancos Town Board trustee Jim Verghis was recalled.

Cara and Casey Hill are making Mancos proud. The sisters, daughters of Gary and Glenda Hill, are starting this season for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team.

Doug Wyman and daughter Randy spent Christmas break in Tyler, Texas.

Clyde and Irene Sheek hosted seven of their eight grandchildren at a grandchildren-only party on December 28.

Jack and Mary Ann Ott celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve.

My wife turned 79 in April, and a cousin turned 80, which reminds me that it won't be long until I'll become history, not just be writing about it.
